The 2020-2021 school year was an interesting one to say the least. I thought I'd share some things my middle schoolers taught me this past year! 1. If you don't say "Kobe" before you shoot in trashket ball, it
doesn't count
2. It's mandatory to have at least one back up TikTok account
3. No matter what the temperature is, wear a hoodie.
4. All non-essential papers must be turned into airplanes
5. Tying your shoelaces is a personal choice
6. You can't walk under a door frame normally, you must jump and
slap it
7. Wearing black Doc Martens means you're emo, so wear white
instead
8. Cap = Lying, No Cap = Telling the truth
9. If you're enjoying your meal, unless it's cafeteria food, you must
say "this is bussin' bussin'"
10. SHEEEEEEEESH
(me during "dress like your students
day"... yes, I told myself to pull my
mask up)
Hi Erica!
ReplyDeleteGreat blog topic! Keeping up with our students' interest and lingo is KEY to fostering great relationships with our students. They surely have taught you a lot this year despite the pandemic challenges while learning. Isn't it fun teaching middle school? I just love this age group! I currently teach 9th and 10th graders, and to me it feels like glorified 8th graders. The students come to class with all sorts of new fads. I love it. I too learned, "cap," and "emo" this year. I also have teenagers and I had to laugh at your comment about wearing a hoodie no matter what the temperature time. I recently took my boys to Universal Studios and on one of the hottest days we were there my son walked around the park in 90 + degree weather. He refused to take it off. Oy vey! Thanks for sharing these! ~ Andrea
This is completely spot on! I can relate with almost all of those items posted. Those middle schoolers really know how to keep it interesting on a daily basis. If only we could also add in the unspoken rules they teach us as well including never under any circumstances wear deoderant, unless of course you are coating yourself in Axe after gym. Also, rolling eyes are a must to show your teacher you have no interest whatsoever in what they have to say. In addition, always come to class without a pencil even though they took one of yours earlier in the day. Lastly, the infamous "we never learned that" mantra. They sure know how to keep you on your toes as an educator. I enjoyed this post tremendously.
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteThis was a really fun read! I teach high school, but I can absolutely relate! As a language teacher, I am so interested in learning the new words that develop and then eventually pass away! My students usually like that I am so interested in the words that connect them!
Thank you for sharing!
Kelley
Erica, you never cease to amaze me. This blog post is everything and more, and I cannot help but relate to my students the same way. As challenging as it was, I miss teaching middle school music. It was a joy and you never knew what was going to come out of their mouths! Good luck this year, I cannot wait to see what you accomplish!
